CapeNature introduces SA’s first slow overnight hiking trail

CapeNature has unveiled South Africa’s first slow hiking trail at the scenic De Mond Nature Reserve, offering nature enthusiasts a serene escape just minutes from the historic coastal town of Arniston.

The Damara Trail offers a unique, immersive natural experience, encouraging visitors to slow down and savour their surroundings at a relaxed pace.

Launched in celebration of World Tourism Day on 27 September 2024, the trail aligns with this year’s theme: peace.

As the world marks World Tourism Day, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) highlights the deep link between tourism and peace.

By promoting sustainable tourism, communities can be transformed—creating jobs, fostering inclusivity, and bolstering local economies, all while nurturing a sense of harmony and connection.

Designed for ages 8 and up and suitable for all fitness levels, the Damara Trail offers a unique outdoor experience.

This two-day hike features gentle slopes, smooth terrain, and scenic rest stops, making it more accessible than strenuous trails.

On day one, hikers cover a 5km route (1 hour 45 minutes) to an overnight wooden deck where tents can be set up under the stars, accompanied by the sound of the ocean.

Day two offers an 11.5km coastal hike (3 hours 45 minutes) ending on Arniston Beach.

Hikers can spend the second night at a local Arniston accommodation before a shuttle returns them to De Mond Nature Reserve.

Hikers are encouraged to enjoy the best of nature during the trail.

Interpretive signs along the route offer insights into De Mond’s plants, animals, culture, heritage, shipwrecks, geological formations, and the famous Waenhuiskrans Cave, making this a truly unforgettable experience.

Dr Ashley Naidoo, CEO of CapeNature, says, ‘This hike allows people to connect with nature at a slower pace and fully enjoy their surroundings.’

‘We are proud to constantly innovate in our tourism products, whether it be through our accommodation or hiking offerings, and the Damara Trail is sure to be yet another popular activity for loyal and new CapeNature visitors.’

De Mond Nature Reserve, famed for its coastal views, picnic spots, and rich birdlife, is now a top destination for soft adventurers and seasoned hikers alike with the addition of the Damara Trail, offering a fresh way to explore the Western Cape’s natural heritage.

If you are ready to take on your next unforgettable journey, bookings open from 4 October.
