Become an Otter Spotter!
South African Otter Spotters Research Project, is a citizen science initiative focused on tracking and conserving otter populations across South Africa.
The University of Pretoria is collecting data on otters throughout the country for this large scale research project. If you see an otter along our coast, please report your sighting directly to them. It will greatly contribute to the conservation work on these adorable creatures 🙏
The project is a postdoctoral research initiative based at the Mammal Research Institute (MRI) at the University of Pretoria. Its goal is to map the current distribution, population sizes, and behaviors of South Africa’s native otter species.
Because otters are vital “indicator species,” their presence or absence directly reflects the overall health of local rivers, wetlands, and coastal systems. The data collected helps scientists understand where otters are thriving and identify areas suffering from habitat degradation, water pollution, or human-wildlife conflict.
🌍 Targeted Otter Species
The initiative primarily tracks two species native to South Africa:
- African Clawless Otter (or Cape Clawless Otter): Widespread across freshwater and coastal regions, known for its distinct hand-like, clawless front paws.
- Spotted-necked Otter: A smaller species restricted mostly to permanent, clean freshwater lakes and rivers in northern and eastern parts of the country.
